Three workers at the PSA Peugeot-Citroën car plant in Mulhouse, France, took their lives last month, while pressures at work were cited as a cause by union officials, according to French media reports. The tragic events follow three recent suicides by workers at Renault's R&D center in Guyancourt, where investigators are determining whether Renault is criminally liable for the homicides.

Most Americans are probably unaware of the fact that the France's productivity per worker is among the highest in the world, and surpassed that of the U.S. recently. Workers in the auto sector are under intense pressure here, like they are in the U.S. and Asia as well as elsewhere in Europe. But is the suicide rate higher in the auto industry in general at multi-national firms? Maybe it is in the U.S. but it goes unreported.
