This summer don't miss Infest Wisely, a lo-fi Canadian SF flick about hackers, nanotech marketers, bicycle-riding subversives, and identity theft in the genomic age (hint: it involves stealing DNA via process called "milking"). Each week, production house No Media Kings will post on the Web one of the seven interlinked stories that make up the film – you can already watch the first three. Infest Wisely is the first movie written by novelist Jim Munroe, the Adbustery punk who has achieved indie muse status by inspiring countless freaks and geeks with his traveling roadshows and brilliant science fiction novels like Flyboy Action Figure Comes With Gasmask, Everyone in Silico, and Angry Young Spaceman.
Infest Wisely asks what would happen if Critical Mass teamed up with the geeks from DefCon to stop commercialized nanotech from taking over our bodies and the world. Plus, there are talking cats.
Given that Munroe is an unabashed Utopian, it's no surprise that all labor on this film was donated and that it's been released for free under a CC license (his books are CC licensed too). It's also no surprise that it touches on many of Munroe's fixations: reckless high tech corporations, idealistic culture jammers, and punk art. Funny and smart, the stories of Infest Wisely
move from the tale of an anti-internet hacker, to a woman who eats a beta version of nano-saturated gum so that she can take digital photos with her eyes, and finally to a movement of anti-nano anarchists in
Toronto.
Munroe is at his best when he exposes how subversive communities form like delicate foam at the edges of a waterfall of consumerist garbage.That's what he does in Infest Wisely – we fall in love with his characters because we see how much they help each other, and how they are always trying in their weird ways to make the world a better place. By the end of the seven stories, you'll be so enthralled that you'll forget you're watching a DiY flick made in back alleys with what looks like a hand-held video camera and one light bulb.
