I had the jarring experience on Sunday of my first $50 fill up ($50.15 to be exact), but it will be far from the last. At my local gasoline trough regular jumped 24 cents since my last dousing of petrol, also another record as far as I can remember. While this is painful for those of us on a budget, as the saying goes, no pain, no gain.
Across the nation we're up to $2.97, and in California, it's even worse as gas isnow $3.359.
Since I work at home I drive very little compared to the average Joe, but I still plan on driving even less and try to put off filling up for as long as possible. Gas has been cheaper for us than its relative cost to society since the first oil gusher gushed, and now we are catching up to the rest of the world in understanding that taking a drive has a cost.
Technology will only get us so far in reducing emissions and "freedom" from foreign oil, and unlike the current administration's party line, we will all have to sacrifice to some extent if we want cleaner air and fewer wars based (at least in part) on control of energy.
