The folks in Utah are turning public lawn liabilities into biodiesel bumper crops. The Utah Department of Transportation and Utah State University are teaming up to plant biodiesel crops on the median that divides I-15.

Keeping medians mowed is an expense, but planting crops such as safflower, camelina, canola and perennial flax could more than pay for the upkeep while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This year they will test the idea, and if all goes well the state will reap what it sews on a larger scale. Smart thinking Utah!
