DaimlerChrysler is finally bringing its Smart Cars to the U.S., but they may not have enough to go around.

United Auto Group is importing the cars for DCX and already has deposits on more than 12,000 Smart Cars. UAG only plans on selling 16,000 when the vehicles go on sale next year, so it is possible that all of the vehicles could sell out in advance.

The diminutive Smarts will get 40 miles per gallon which would seem wonderful if not for Toyota Prius and Honda Civic Hybrids that are much bigger and offer better fuel economy. Urban dwellers might still prefer the unique size and small parking space requirements.

With gasoline likely to top $4 a gallon this summer it's a good time to launch the vehicle line. I'm thinking a diesel version with 50 mpg would sell even better, so maybe that would be a possibility for the future.
