According to AAA, gas is now $3.129 per gallon nationwide, with 38 states offering gas at $3 or more. While consumers plan to cut back on shopping and other expenses, the higher cost of gasoline won't deter Memorial Day travel plans, according to CNN.

The "freedom" to drive as far and as often as we'd like has become so entrenched into the American psychology that we'll cut back on anything but driving, which makes no sense since the only way to slow the rising price of gas it drive less. The Right to Drive is as sacred as the Right to Bear Arms.

Even though the economy may take a hit, the last thing we should do isconsider reducing the gasoline tax as some in Congress have contemplated. Only a sustained period of higher priced gasoline will change our century-long auto fixation.
