NYC-based Brazilian pop band Forro in the Dark has earned a bunch of buzz recently for its killer live shows and its spunky, celebratory new album. Conceived in 2002 out of a jam session at Nublu – the same fabled East Village jazz club that spawned Brazilian Girls – the group has gone on to tour with artists as diverse as Beck, Tom Waits, and Enrique Iglesias. The group merges dance music from all over the world without the results sounding at all forced or corny. Listen and you'll hear salsa, polka, funk, and rock mixed in with hints of country, Tropicália, hip-hop, and electronic music. The band counts Miho Hatori (of Cibo Mato), Bebel Gilberto, Seu Jorge, and David Byrne among its collaborators.
