The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety tested the 2007 mid-size convertibles and the results will make you happy for the hard top. Of the 10 vehicles tested only the Saab 9-3 and Volvo C70 earned good ratings in front, side and rear crashes, and they were also the only vehicles with electronic stability controls.
The Pontiac G6 bombed the test, getting only an acceptable result for frontal crash protection and marginal side and rear impacts. Also, during the frontal test, the crash test dummy's head hit the instrument panel, which the agency says rarely happens.
Be careful of the cars behind you if you are driving a new Chrysler Sebring, Toyota Camry Solara, BMW 3 series, Audi A4 Cabriolet or Ford Mustang convertible: each of these cars received poor markets in the rear crash test.
