Last night, someone told me that the average American swallows 8 spiders a year in their sleep. The theory, apparently, is that while I lay on my back, comatosely snoring, a thin rope of drool slobbering down my cheek and pooling on my pillow under the nape of my neck, an arachnid excretes from its bowels a long strand of silk and slowly descends into the moist, warm hollow of my throat.

I did not sleep well. There was only one reason a spider could want to enter my mouth: to lay a pulsating and gelatinous sack of spider eggs in my belly. I lay wide-eyed in the dark; every time my eyes started to close, I thought I saw a scurry of insect movement through my lashes, which caused me to immediately jump up, hooting and screaming, to flick on the lights and madly slap the ceiling with a handy broom.

Needless to say, I'm not in the best of moods this morning. But this photo gallery of an adorable Russian girl getting an ear replacement has really warmed my heart. Isn't she a darling? Note: I don't actually know what this pixie's name is.
