Bill Watterson, the creator of Calvin and Hobbes, has long taken a stand against the commercialization of his creations by slapping them on t-shirts, mugs, calendars and the like, and especially by animating them. But you have to wonder if he'd change his mind if he saw Italian animation student Donato DiCarlo's take on the beloved strip, uploaded to YouTube with little fanfare.

It is so wonderful, so loving, so absolutely dedicated to preserving the heart and spirit of its source material that I'm just in awe. The irony, of course, is that if Donato lived in the states, the Universal Press Syndicate would likely sue him. For that matter, watch this while you can, before they cease and desist YouTube: this is just beautiful and astounding work.
