NBC has announced a Heroes spinoff, Heroes: Origins, which incorporates an American Idol-style audience vote for who will be next season's new hero. 6 summer episodes will each feature a new character, and the audience fave will join the cast in fall. I know it sounds gimmicky, but I like the idea because it's in keeping with the spirit of the comic books this show pays homage to. Comics often have a special series, or a few one-offs, which aren't strictly within the continuity of the book. If it weren't for special series like that, I wouldn't have been able to drown my sorrows over the crappiness of Spider-Man 3 by reading the entire run of Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane. I'm looking forward to Heroes: Origins, and I may even cast a vote or ten.
