The VoxTec Phraselator may be the closest thing we have to Star Trek's universal translator. The one-pound PDA-like device picks up what the speaker is saying via a built-in microphone and translates it audibly into the listener's language. Alternately, translation can be done through the LCD touch screen. And because the Phraselator was built for military use, it's impervious to most physical abuse. It sells for $2,000, however, so don't throw out your English-Spanish dictionary just yet.
