The greatest generation showed what sacrifice meant by giving up their "right" to unlimited driving 65 years ago. In May of 1942, states began rationing gasoline to support the war effort, and drivers were limited to just 3 gallons of gas per week. How many of us could survive on that today?
The gas rationing -- along with a national speed limit of 35 miles per hour -- lasted until the end of the World War II, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. So we should stop whining about the "high" price of gasoline and be thankful that we don't have a global struggle such as WWII to disrupt our lives.
