Today is national "gas out" day -- a day not to fill up your gas tank - or at least it is according to an Internet e-mail campaign. While sending a message to oil companies is a noble idea, not filling up won't make a difference.
If people want prices to go down and to impact the bottom line of oil companies, they'll have to start driving less. Instead of gas out day, a drive-less month would be much more effective. If drivers pledge to reduce their driving by 50 percent for a month by taking public transit, combining trips or (gasp) walking, then it theoretically would reduce demand and therefore lower the price (as long as refineries are operating uninterrupted). That would get some attention and clear the air too.
