Flaming Lips to Storm the Great White Way

Lips2Few bands have ever provided as elaborate stage-productions-of-the-mind as Flaming Lips, with their wacky/evocative lyrics and lush, idiosyncratic soundscapes. Soon we'll get to see what a Lips show really looks like -- they've struck a deal to turn their high-concept anime opera Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots 5.1 into a Broadway musical. If the Okie-band-makes-it-big-in-the-big-city angle isn't impressive enough, turns out that TV icon and fellow traveler Aaron Sorkin (Sports Night, West Wing, Studio 60) is writing the script with Lips frontman Wayne Coyne. Which is good news for Coyne, who wasn't sure how to flesh out the story: "[I]t's not really a story," he told Entertainment Weekly. "It's more like a mood. There's a Japanese girl; she fights some robots; that's five minutes. After that I don't know.''

Coyne's already visualized the story with his Yoshimi comics (pictured).
