European carmakers are only slowly reducing the CO2 emissions of the cars they produce, government rhetoric and pending legislation aside. According to a study by French association Agence de l'environnement et de la maîtrise de l'énergie (Ademe), the average CO2 emissions levels of Europe's cars have hardly budged from 2004 until 2006, when average per-car CO2 emissions only ever-so-slightly decreased from 154g of CO2 per km to 152 per km. As the French daily Le Monde points out, it will be a challenge for Europe's cars to adhere to the 2008 European specs of 140 g of CO2 per km.
