Several state police departments are crawling into the digital age by replacing the paper trail of citations with a digital flow. Washington State and Maryland are among the states where officers are testing systems that create electronic citations on the spot.
No one likes to get tickets, but they are issued for reasons of safety and should be processed most efficiently. As reported by Stateline, they also can make it safer for officers.
We should go further and create a national drivers license that prevents scofflaws and drivers who have convictions for DUI from moving to other states and getting clean licenses. Some states are doing a better job of sharing information, but we should make sure that people only hold a license in one state. While a national ID smacks of big brother to some, it is acceptable in other countries. The social security number is a form of a national ID, and the data should be tied to the social security number to simplify tracking criminals and streamlining the licensing process.
