How many startups can one man helm before the bubble bursts? At least three if you're following Web 2.0 poster boy Kevin Rose's track record. Both Digg and Revision3 have grown in prominence, but it's the rumblings of Kevin's new venture that has caught our eye.
With Digg's HD DVD Meltdown we've seen how even small web apps can become culpable in the hands of a mob. But given how public and memorable that meltdown became, it's safe to say that more than a few people are interested in what Kevin and his pals are cooking up for us. We first caught wind of the new project during a recent Diggnation and now GigaOM is reporting this:
What bright, shiny new app are they working on? GigaOM's sources describe it as "a communications tool, that can be dubbed as an IM
competitor." Can we expect the mobility and immediacy of Twitter's functionality mixed with the mob-driven relevance of Digg? And if so, will it deliver its own content, or just distribute the brilliance (or banality) of its users?
We've seen both sides from Rose's projects, so it's hard to say. But with a market that's being flooded with social networking startups, it's going to have to hack some aspect of communication and community using a method that will clearly set it apart. We can speculate endlessly, but officially mum's the word--at least until later on this month. We'll give you more as soon as it develops!
