The first of the global-warming-themed shorts from Live Earth’s SOS series has landed online (see the full release on msn.com here) after it and eight other of the 60 total shorts in the series premiered last week at the Tribeca Film Festival’s opening gala, which was hosted by Al Gore.

Director Rob Reiner is back as faux documentary filmmaker Martin Di Bergi, chronicling the exploits of the cult fave, mock-rock heroes played by Michael McKean, Christopher Guest and Harry Shearer. Spinal Tap have popped up periodically since their smashing 1984 spoof, and their legion of fans will be happy to see the aging faux rockers contributing to a good cause. This time we find Nigel struggling to find jockeys small enough to ride the miniature horses he’s raising; David has been busy running a colon clinic as well as managing hip-hop acts; while Derek has been in rehab because of his internet addiction.

Their new song is called “Warmer Than Hell,” and the lads will perform it and others in London, July 7, at this summer’s seven-continent Live Earth mega music event, Concert for a Climate in Crisis. So be sure and crank the amps up to 11 and watch out for the exploding drummer.

The films will be debuting throughout Tribeca, and should become fairly ubiquitous by the time the concerts near. Other SOS films include one with a flooded New York City; an animated hippo and turtle discussing rising temperatures; footage from a massive, rotting landfill in Brazil; and a reminder of the especially harsh effect global warming is expected to have on Africa.

We’ll keep you posted here at Underwire as more of these films are made available. Spinal Tap will appear at Wembley Stadium along with Madonna, Razorlight and Red Hot Chili Peppers, while the U.S. show is at Giants Stadium, with the Police, Bon Jovi and Kanye West so far signed up. More on those concerts and lineups as they become available.
