The 2007 Webby Awards nominees have been announced and, as usual, there are many reasons to eye the annual event with a healthy amount of skepticism. Listed as a nominee in the Broadband category is Revver, a video site that has seen a mass exodus of the original team in recent months as many wonder how long the site will last under the direction of new COO Kevin Wells. In the category of Movie And Film, the site for the indie film “Shortbus” somehow shows up. If you didn’t see this gem of a movie, consider yourself among the majority of lucky film fans that missed a troupe of amateur actors in engaged in actual porn scenes via shaky cam.

Finally, one category proves that The Webby Awards intelligentsia wants you to hop off the meme train of “citizen journalism” and “user-generated content.” In the category of News the nominees are: BBC News, NPR, Reuters, Salon and Truthdig (A token entry to appease the masses?). All the Webby press releases revel in the fact that The New York Times once hailed the event as “The Oscars of the Internet.” An apt comparison, as the awards are about as accurate as The Oscars in recognizing talent (remember, Cher has an Oscar).
