GoDaddy's Elizabeth Driscoll called yesterday to report that the domain name registrar had shut down the owner of virginiatechshooting.com, a site registered through GoDaddy shortly after the massacre last week. GoDaddy had been monitoring the site since THREAT LEVEL alerted them to it here.
On Wednesday, the site went active and started trying to collect money, according to Driscoll. GoDaddy checked with Virginia Tech officials, who didn't know anything about the site or three other similar sites registered to the same name. After GoDaddy failed to hear back from the registrant, it suspended the sites until the owner can prove their legitimacy.
"If it's a legitimate site, by now we would have heard some squawking," Driscoll said.
