Government employees are getting a free ride when it comes to commuting instead of taking public transportation. A federal program that provides transit passes to encourage workers to leave their cars at home is being abused to the tune of $17 million a year or more, according to the Washington Post.
Workers are given free passes for up to $105 per month for subways, trains and buses but instead are driving to work and selling their transit vouchers, violating employment policies. These savvy charlatans have found a sophisticated black market system that prevents the government from seeing their deception -- they are selling them on eBay and Craigslist using their real names. Uncle Sam just looks the other way.
How brazen is that? The bureaucracy has failed to track workers who quit the government years ago, who are also provided with free parking spaces, and in some cases, people who never worked for the government. And you worried about filing your taxes a day late...
