To my profound delight, Stickypig sent me a link to photos of a fantastically beautiful crocodile, grinning around a mouthful of severed human arm. With echoes of Peter Pan, Jurassic Park, and the paintings of James Gurney, this croc and the arm form a thrilling still life of indigo, ivory, gold and flesh.

Veterinarian Chang Po-yu was reaching through iron bars to removetranquilizer darts before treating the 440-pound (200-kilogram) reptilewhen the inadequately sedated animal bit the vet's forearm off.

But for the vet, it wasn't quite a farewell to arm.

Thank you National Geographic for a delightful pun, and for the good news. The vet got his arm back, the crocodile asserted his dignity, and we are all reminded that dinosaurs still grace our earthly rivers. It's enough to bring a little shine to my eyes.
