Clipmarks_logoWired News has learned that social web clipping service Clipmarks will debut enhancements to its search engine next week. Clipmarks is extending the site's search capabilities to include searches of tags, text within clips, clip titles and comments left by users. The new search tool will go live on Tuesday, April 10.

Clipmarks lets users save text, images and videos from web pages as they surf around. Clips can be made public and shared, and other users can comment on your clips. Conceptually, it's a bit like del.icio.us, except you can save much more than just the URL. Clipmarks shares its functional with desktop apps like iLighter and EverNote. And Google Notebook is Clipmarks without the extensive social networking features.

The site's current search tool only finds tags. As you can imagine, that limits the search tool's usefulness considerably. Making the search more comprehensive should make it easier for Clipmarks users to find actual pieces of content they've clipped. It's also going to make life a lot easier for people who haven't quite grokked tagging.

Clipmarks hopes the enhancements will also allow them to offer an alternative people-powered search engine. Since users have the option to tag clips publicly, they'll be contributing to a pool of hand-culled content about any given topic. A company representative tells us that Clipmarks currently has 250,000 users.
