The iconic yellow cab of New York is undergoing a redesign, and the prototypes are just about to be road-tested. The city's Design Trust for Public Space and Parsons School of Design have been working with fleet owners, cabbies, local officials, and top designers like Antenna Design and Pratt to revamp New York's standard issue.

In April, the trust will release the first-ever taxi report that covers a 10-year period. The goal? Outline a whole slew of fleet improvements and options, from alt-fuel cabs to one-stop-shopping taxi stands (the great rival to the New York deli?). All this is just in time to celebrate the urban chariot's centennial anniversary.
