If you live in the Bay Area, be sure to come out to Berkeley this Sunday to see a passel of amazing science fiction writers (and one smut writer) strut their stuff and raise money for the Octavia Butler scholarship fund. The scholarship honors the memory of Octavia Butler -- an amazing science fiction author (pictured at right) who died last year -- by paying to send several writers of color to the prestigious and influential Clarion science fiction workshops. Back in the 1960s, Butler got her start at Clarion. Her books, which often deal with racial and colonial issues, are supremely-written and I've said a lot about them elsewhere. This post, however, is about a fundraiser.
So if you want to raise money for SF writers of color to go to Clarion, or just want to hear some great readings, come out this Sunday, March 4, at 7 PM at the Starry Plough Pub in Berkeley. You'll hear from kickass SF author Nalo Hopkinson (New Moon's Arms), smutmaster Susie Bright(Best American Erotica), and lesbian vampire lover Jewelle Gomez (The Gilda Stories), along with Jennifer de Guzman, Guillermo Gomez-Pena (Ethno-Techno), and Marta Acosta (Happy Hour At Casa Dracula).
The Starry Plough is at 3101 Shattuck Avenue in Berkeley. Admission is $5 to $20 sliding scale -- but remember, this is a benefit for the scholarship fund, so be generous!
