Rippling metal and smooth-lined plastics. The creations of German-born designer Luigi Colani -- long known for his work with new materials and aerodynamics -- look straight out of 2001: A Space Odyssey (both in that good and not-so-good 60s kinda way).

On Thursday, London's Design Museum will open Colani's first exhibit in the UK (that's pretty amazing for a top-tier designer who's been around for five decades). Dubbed Translating Nature, the show highlights Colani's organic design style, which has produced biodynamic cars, boats, planes, ceramics and everyday consumer goods like eyeglasses and TVs. Hey, the New York Museum of Modern Art keeps his Sony headphones and Canon T90 camera in its permanent collection.

Building Design has a fun podcast with Luigi Colani, who actually studied aerodynamics at the Sorbonne. They get him talking about sex, men's hands and Zaha Hadid. Excellent.
