Lotus, which has grabbed headlines lately for its work on the Tesla Roadster, is making its own foray into eco-friendly territory with the EVE Hybrid, a low-emission sedan with a 1.6-liter Proton Gen-2 engine and an electric hybrid powertrain.

With that hybrid powertrain and a continuously variable transmission, Lotus managed to bring CO2 emissions down by 22 percent (from 172g/km to 134g/km) while increasing fuel efficiency from 39.2 to 50.2 mpg, a jump of 28 percent. Its 141 hp will get you from 0 to 60 in 9 seconds, with a top speed of 118 mph. The EVE ("Efficient, Viable, Environmental") helps build out Lotus' lineup, which already includes two lightweight aluminum sports cars: the Elise roadster (on which the Tesla Roadster is loosely based) and the Exige.
