Last month, Swedish-based company Oceanic-Creations unveiled plans to build floating commercial and residential buildings around the world using a unique plastic composite material. The material, which is typically used in the defense industry, will feature built-in insulation that makes the buildings suitable for all climate types. The maker also claims that it is up to six times lighter and ten times stronger than steel (depending on reinforcement material), which means it could cut maintenance costs by 30 to 40 percent.

The pyramid-shaped Maya Hotel will be the company’s first project – a building estimated to cost around $209 million that will be located on the Carribean Sea, south of Cancun, Mexico. It's expected to be completed by 2010.
