Crazymeds.org, billed as the Good, the Bad, and the Funny of Neurological Medications, is a website full of user reviews of drugs, from the people you never hear from- the ones that take them.
The idea of going on anti-depressants or other psycho-active drugs really bothers most people. Whether it's the fact that theses drugs are often dismal failures at treating the problem, the fact that they have horrendous side-effects, or that fact that you're admitting that maybe you're a little bit crazy by going on them- it's no fun. By the time many people go on these drugs, they're fighting a sense of failure and hopelessness that has driven to try something they weren't previously willing to try. They often face social stigmas as well about their attempts to help themselves.
And frankly, isn't that a great time in your life to be trying to adjust medication that might help you, or might make you worse, impotent, unable to sleep, or gain or lose weight uncontrollably? Information would come in handy at times like this- but it's usually either biased pharma marketing or
impenetrable doctor talk or Tom Cruise. Crazy Meds is invaluable- a human look at the drugs and their effects. In many cases, other patients can give you a better idea of what to expect than anyone else- I'd love to see this idea taken up over more of medicine. Plus it's really funny. Of course, it's not for prescribing or diagnosing, it just tells you what taking them is like.
