If "clean diesel" reminds you that you have jeans in the dryer, stop reading now. Conversely, if your dreams are filled with images of the sort of engines Europeans have and Americans don't, we have good news, sort of: General Motors — an American company! — is unveiling a new 2.9-liter V-6 turbo-diesel engine with state-of-the-art injection and combustion technology. Minimum emissions. Maximum performance. Sweet.

Now for the downside: GM is targeting — surprise! — the European luxury car market with this one, starting with the new Cadillac CTS in 2009. Why won't they sell it in Chattanooga or Dallas or Portland or (for God's sake) Detroit? Well, if you want them to market this 184 kW/250 hp clean diesel wonder in the U.S., now is the time to say so. Who knows? Maybe Rick Wagoner will see your comment and have a change of heart.
