Parsons The New School for Design’s Communication Design and Technology department has an upcoming exhibition exploring the world of popular video game, The Sims. With support from Sims developer Electronic Arts (EA) Inc., The Sims: In the Hands of Artists, will include works ranging from machinima, physical computing, interactive media, three-dimensional printing to painting, drawing and toy design.
One work, titled Mill of the Mind, studies the effects of the power of authority through a Milgram-like experiment that prompts visitors to deliver a series of increasingly higher voltages to the Sims test subject.
While another installation by Ed Chow presents packaged toys with interchangeable parts to represent the customizability of the Sims.
The exhibit, on view from April 19 – May 12, is one of a series of Parsons CDT exhibits at the Chelsea Art Museum until June. These include:
Ten Years Running: Design and Technology 10th Anniversary Exhibition, April 5-14
