Striking looks may have you confusing this laptop for a Mac. WAN system works flawlessly — a rarity for Vista notebooks. Mediocre 2 1/2 hours battery life is bolstered by an enormous, included, power slab. Screen is crazy bright: The 12.1-inch display uses LED backlighting.
TIRED
Spring-loaded hinge tends to slam the lid shut violently. Only two measly USB ports. Touchpad and mouse buttons are too small and placed too far to the right. Second mortgage required to cover cost.

We debated whether we should reveal the Portégé R400's price tag up front or save it for a surprise ending. OK, here goes: It's $3,500, easily making it the most expensive ultralight we've ever laid our hands on. But what an ultralight it is! You simply won't find a more impressive machine in this weight class. At 3.8 pounds it's a real featherweight, yet its Core Duo CPU, 2GB of RAM, and wireless WAN (Verizon) headline some impressive specs. It's also a convertible tablet and the first shipping laptop to include Microsoft Active Notifications: A small LCD on the front bezel that displays time, battery life, Wi-Fi signal, and whether you've got mail waiting, even if the PC is off.
