Agricultural biotech giant Monsanto and cotton seed company Delta and Pine Land Company agreed lastAugust to merge, but watchdog groups protested. Now, as the case sits in front of the U.S. Department of Justice, the Center for Food Safety has released a 59-page report (.pdf) on why the merger would be bad for farmers and consumers (higher seed prices, environmental problems caused by biotech crops, increased concentration in the cotton seed industry, threats to organic cotton). DPL, along with the USDA, owns the patent to Terminator cotton.
If you prefer to put organic cotton against your skin, you should pay attention. I'm developing a quick story on this, more soon!
