Here's another reason to turn on the air conditioning and leave the windows up: driving a lot -- especially with the window open -- appears to contribute to skin cancer, at least in men.

A researcher put it this way:

"This finding supports our theory that drivers who regularly spend more time in the car over the course of several years are more likely to develop skin cancers on the left side of the body, particularly skin cancers like basal cell carcinoma and lentigo maligna that develop gradually over time."

Why keep the windows up? Because they provide some -- although not a whole lot -- protection from the sun.

The weird thing is that women seem to be much less affected by this. The press release doesn't speculate about possible reasons why. Maybe because there are fewer women who drive a lot? Or maybe men just like to keep the windows open and stick their elbows out more than women?
