I figured the Renault spokeswoman with whom I spoke today would give me the standard "no comment" response about a report late yesterday in the Wall Street Journal, which said anonymous sources told a reporter that neither Renault nor Nissan were interested in buying DaimlerChrysler's up-for-sale Chrysler unit. I mean the spokeswoman just came out and said the report was true: No, Renault doesn't want to buy into Chrysler, she said.

This is after Carlos Ghosn has repeatedly told reporters that Renault still seeks a third-party alliance, after its tie-up talks with General Motors fell through last year. I figured at least that Renault would never say never, especially with one of the Big Three as an option.

What does this say about the state of Chrysler?
