I'm feeling sad today because Doctor Who uberfan Gary Russell refuses to let me interview him for an article I'm writing about Doctor Who fandom for The Believer. Of course I'm interviewing many other cool people for the article -- and I'm very grateful they're taking the time to chat with me. But Russell should be among them because he's done just about everything a good and talented Whovian should do: he's written for Doctor Who Magazine, penned Doctor Who books, worked for Doctor Who audio adventure production company Big Finish, and now he actually works on the show itself for the BBC. When I asked to interview him, he said he was sick of talking about "working in Cardiff" and that he's too "dull." I tried begging and promising to be amusing, but to no avail.
Now I will attempt (pathetically) to woo him into speaking to me by posting a little-known fact about him: Russell once tried to start a fanzine called KKLAK! based on this silly image (at right) from an early 1970s Doctor Who book featuring the third doctor.
C'mon, Gary, see what a good fan of your fandom I am? I know obscure facts about you! I think KKLAK! is a great name for a fanzine! I will never, ever come to Cardiff and stalk you! Please, Gary, speak to me!
