Stem cell research in the United States is largely in the hands of infertile couples, not the government or religious groups. They get to decide whether they'll give up for research the embryos they've created after much effort (injections, hormone therapy, expense). And it's not an easy decision, even if you're not religious.
An interesting point… but who will pay for the research is really the crux of the stem cell debate.
