Every once in a while, the high fashion scene will produce something of such ineffable style and beauty, I find myself wishing that the Oscars had a photoshoot category. Usually, these shoots are presided over by Annie Leibovitz, and so it is in Killers Kill, Dead Men Die, an all-star, platonically idealized presentation of film noir tableaux.

Leibovitz is a perfect example of breaking the rules of photography in all the right ways. Her compositions routinely chop off figures at the ankles, halfway through the face, top of the head, and scatter them throughout the frame in bizarre and uncouth ways. A lesser photographer wouldn't be able to make anything of it. And the results are incredible.

Jennifer Connolly, Bruce Willis, Ben Affleck, Tobey Maguire, Kristin Dunst, Julianne Moore, Forrest Whittaker, Dame Judi Dench, Sylvester Stallone, Robert Downey Jr., and a dozen more. The best thing about using real actors in photo spreads is the nuance of expression, and the lack of aesthetic disconnect that exists between the average viewer and a 6-foot Parisian catwalk model.
