I often find myself thinking of this scene from Godzilla vs. the Smog Monster (also known as Godzilla vs. Hedorah). Like most giant monster movies, this flick really gets good at the end when the Big G starts fighting with his nemesis. But this monster is particularly poignant these days, as the world reels from the findings about global warming published in the IPCC's summary report.
As G fans recall, Hedorah the Smog Monster was created because humans pumped so much sludge into the oceans and atmosphere that they created an enormous, dreck-eating beast who poops sludge and eats the goo from smokestacks. Since the flick was released in 1971, Hedorah also has a fondness for demolishing hippie love-ins full of guitar-strumming kids. Mostly, though, he serves as a warning to Japan and the world that if we don't stop with the emissions, we're going to be destroyed. 36 years later, it's looking like Hedorah would be more comfy than ever on our toasty, toxic planet. Too bad the Big G can't save us from pollution. Well, we can dream . . . and watch this amazing monster fight between G and Hedorah. Sadly Luckily this particular clip doesn't contains the controversial conclusion to the fight, in which G reaches into Hedorah and pulls out two weird orbs (eggs?). The fans have argued over what the hell this means for ages. Somebody seems to have put this entire flick up on YouTube in snippets, so you can find the conclusion if you really want it. Let me know if you figure out the orb thing.
