If you watched "Grey's Anatomy" last night, you saw a woman with Alzheimer's disease -- the mother of one of the main characters -- suddenly become lucid.
For her, it was as if she'd been frozen in time for five years, since she first became ill. She was sharp as a tack (and mighty nasty), just like she used to be.
Then, after maybe a day or two, she went back to being senile (or demented, as doctors like to call it.)
Is this even possible? Alzheimer's disease clogs up the brain with bits of gunk called plaque, so it's hard to imagine memories would still be around and accessible.
I'm contacting a couple neurologists to see if they can shed light on this. Readers, have you ever known someone to recover temporarily from Alzheimer's or a similar condition?
