In the race to be the first automaker to build hybrids in Canada, it's ... it's ... it's GM by a nose! A very long nose: Runner-up Ford won't start building hybrids north of the border until 2010, whereas GM kicks off production of its two-mode hybrid Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups at its Oshawa truck plant in fall 2008. GM's Tahoe and Yukon hybrids will start rolling off an unidentified U.S. assembly line a few months earlier. GM should start cracking out two-mode hybrid Saturn VUEs and Chevrolet Equinoxes at its plant in Ingersoll, Ontario in late '08 or early '09.

Ford's first Canadian-built Edge and Lincoln MKX hybrids, due in 2010, will be assembled at Ford's plant in Oakville, west of Toronto.
