See what happens when John tries to pretend he isn't a homo? He reigns in his magnificent imagination and comes up with "erratic thoughts" topics that are far too pedestrian for a guy who loves the movie Hostel and once risked anaphylactic shock from cat allergies just to hit on a babe.

So . . . ho hum, this week John wants us to list five blogs we read regularly that aren't Gawker. FYI, I never read Gawker because it doesn't have as many pictures as People magazine.

Here are my five off-the-beaten path blog faves:

BLDG BLOG: OK, so this blog isn't terribly obscure, but the folks who run it have endlessly fascinating things to say about futurism, architecture and urban landscapes. They post incredible pictures of bizarre moments in physical infrastructure. And they also have a healthy interest in science fictional landscapes too.

Zombos Closet of Horror: Run by "Iloz Zoc, astute valet to Zombos, the famous horror actor," this blog details the weird, fictionalized events in the life of a horror movie afficionado who claims he lives "in the crumblingbattlements of his mansion on the Gold Coast of Long Island" with Zombos' wife Zimba and sundry children. I can never quite understand the soap opera lives of Iloz, Zombos and Zimba, but they provide an amusing frame story to the meat of this blog, which are detailed, smart reviews of classic horror movies by a guy who knows his stuff.

Slashdong: Run by thetechnosexual qDot, Slashdong is devoted to sexual technologies that arefree or open source in some fashion. There are how-tos on usingordinary objects like remote-controlled golf balls for sex play, andthere are fairly cerebral discussions about why vibrators should bebuilt to open specs. Plus, qDot is the only person I know who professesto be a "shapie," somebody who wants to have sex while shaped as ageometrical object. If you want to know what makes a girl like medevelop an online crush, now you know.

John Hawks Anthropology Weblog: There's nothing more fascinating than reading about how cutting-edge science is revealing the ancient history of our planet and the species inhabiting it. Especially when the guy writing about it is an anthro professor who knows his shit -- and can write about it in an engaging way that is both accessible and technically sophisticated. Hawks always has the latest news on developments in anthro and genomics, and he places both in perspective for dilettante anthro geeks like myself.

Online Fandom: Nancy Baym'sblog about online fandom, with a focus on weird new permutations of fancommunities -- especially how companies are harnessing fan power tohelp them advertise and produce various bits of pop culture. Baym is aprofessor at the University of Kansas, an author, and apparently hangsout with R.E.M. once in a while.
