An EC spokesman denied yesterday’s report in the FT that EC policymakers were softening emissions statutes for cars and small trucks. While the EC yesterday did, as the FT reported, institute legislative guidelines for fuel mixes, the EC representative said the burden would be shared by the car and small truck industry as well. He also said it was almost certain that the EC would propose mandates for car and small truck emissions next week and would discontinue voluntary industry targets.

Yesterday, the FT said: "Europe's car industry last night scored a late victory in its battle to scale back tough new emissions standards, as Brussels switched the focus of its campaign against climate change from cleaner engines to greener fuels."

Not true, the EC official said. The shift of restrictions and constraints has not been “switched” away form the car industry to fuel suppliers.
