I've woken up in a parallel universe where Veronica Mars just keeps getting worse and worse rather than better and better. Last week's episode was OK, but then this week they slap us with KILLING SHERIFF LAMB??? And then making Veronica's dad the sheriff again without any explanation whatsoever? What the hell, rulers of CW? Lamb was one of the great ongoing characters in this show, a dipshit with a heart of gold, who always had great lines and wonderful comic delivery.

Plus, Lamb's role was crucial because he represented the kind of bumbling, institutional law enforcement that Veronica and father Keith had to fight against. The whole premise of the damn show is that Keith had lost his job as sheriff, thus making our heroes a pair of scrappy underdogs who have to break the law to make sure justice is done. Michael Muhney, who played Lamb, told E! Online that he wasn't warned in advance that he'd be killed off, and said he was still in shock:

I’ve been reading what everyone is writing online and hearing allthe different points of view, and I found what one person said to beinteresting. They said that last night’s episode sort of cheapened thepilot for them, because they made such a big deal about Keith beingousted as sheriff and no longer being an '09er, and their family incomewas so much that they were going to be an '02er, and they were going tolive on the wrong side of the tracks, and it was a huge adjustment insetting the tone for noir in Neptune. You know, I had always thought inmy mind that the only way that Keith was ever going to be sheriff againwas in the final episode of the final season to put ahappily-ever-after spin on it.

Now that dad is sheriff and Veronica hangs with rich kids, where is the noir-ish feeling? Gone are the days of the first season, when class conflict loomed in every episode. Gone are the days of the second season, when twisty plots were still fun. I never thought I'd say this, but -- CANCEL *VERONICA MARS *AND PUT ME OUT OF MY MISERY!!! I'll keep watching it no matter what happens, but doing so is starting to feel like a punishment.

Meanwhile, Muhney is campaigning to get a role on Battlestar Galactica. He's got my vote.
