Re: MySpace Passwords Aren't So Dumb
By Bruce Schneier
From: Felix Mitchell
Nice article about password security; you sure are lucky to get your hands on such data. One thing that I thought about that should make you feel even happier about password security is that there's probably a correlation between a user's password security and their ability to detect scams, i.e., the dumb people fell for the phishing attack, so you're seeing the passwords of dumb people. In reality it's likely that the average password security is higher.

Re: Secure Passwords Keep You Safer
By Bruce Schneier
From: Gary Noter
You noted this in your article: "What's happening is that the Windows operating system's memory management leaves data all over the place in the normal course of operations. You'll type your password into a program, and it gets stored in memory somewhere. Windows swaps the page out to disk, and it becomes the tail end of some file. It gets moved to some far out portion of your hard drive, and there it'll sit forever. Linux and Mac OS aren't any better in this regard."
Out of the box, Mac OS X is not any better, though, like most "I'm paid by Bill somehow" media reporters, your total lack of technical insight about Mac OS X shows an inability to give a true picture. (Yeah, I'm slamming you.)
Mac OS X has the ability to encrypt memory written to files with an extremely high security encryption. Yes, the user does have to proactively enable it via the Security panel (Encrypt Virtual Memory). Your failure to note this shows an inept ability to provide options for readers to consider systems that have tighter security.
Once again, yer a lemming following the other lemmings over the Windoze cliff.
