Re: Is Ubuntu Linux for You, Too?
By Seán Captain
From: Paul Gilbert

Thank you for the article about Ubuntu Linux. I have installed the operating system on a couple of different machines: an older Pentium 1.0 GHz and a Dell laptop. I have thought of installing Ubuntu before, but the whole text-line installation frankly scared me. With 6.06, it was a matter of answering six questions and the installation took place.

I have been impressed with the depth of software that came with Ubuntu, as well as the ease with which the hardware was incorporated into the system. I had no problems with sound or video, for example, and surfing the net wirelessly with my laptop has been a snap. I simply plugged in the card and it was found immediately. I did have to install extra codecs to get DVDs and MP3s to run, but compare that to installing drivers for everything, which is the usual fate of Windows users.

You ask whether or not Ubuntu can compete with Windows or Mac OS and you're probably right -- not yet. It might not be ready to take on the big boys of Redmond or Cupertino, but it's getting there. It may not happen today, or tomorrow, but Ubuntu will make its presence known.

Good one -- that was a fun read. By the time I reached the end I came to the conclusion that just about anything could be substituted for sports -- work, business, politics, school....

It's all like watching billionaires arguing with celebrities or something mindless. Thanks for the chuckle.

Re: 10 Top Tech Towns

Perhaps you can use your fancy algorithm software you acquired from NASA to look into your neighbors to the north. I live in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, home of the No. 3 tech-savvy university in North America (University of Waterloo) and the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics (EinsteinFest and Pure Math) and a dozen more avant-garde companies such as Research in Motion, Open Text, MKS and Sybase Canada.

You might also find out that Waterloo has the largest wireless access-point grid and the top research facility for the next generation of high-frequency microwave antenna. Tooting the U.S. horn is all fine and dandy, but let's give credit where it's most due!
