When Susan Buice and Arin Crumley debuted their low-budget love story Four Eyed Monsters at Slamdance two years ago, distributors weren’t wooed by the couple’s quirky courtship via video and home movies. “They kept saying, ‘Who would see a movie about you?’” Buice says. A lot of people, it turns out: FEM, as it’s known among fans, has gone from filmfest loser to Net fave, with the duo’s angsty podcasts boasting a million downloads. That success has led to packed screenings and a DVD. “Festivals are a dead end,” Crumley says. “We’ve found a different way.”
