That would mean hedging your bet by purchasing both plasma and LCD sets and getting them all from Samsung, which recently became Her Majesty's preferred television purveyor. The royal family ordered 100 sets -- ranging from 32-inchers to 63 inches of plasma glory -- from Samsung, which will install them in Buckingham Palace starting next month.

The royals have previously relied on loaner TV sets provided by favor-seeking vendors. Korean newspaper Chosun Ibo notes, with something less than royal graciousness: "This is the first time they are paying good money."

If the House of Windsor is happy with Samsung and continue doing business with them for five years, the company will then be entitled to apply the royal seal to its products.

On a personal note, it's rather disheartening to realize that -- what with one's 16-year-old Sony Trinitron that won't break, even when a bolt of lightning hits the frickin' house -- one is hopelessly behind the times compared even to the British monarchy.
