Ahh, the simplicity of life in China. No technology nail-biting over which next-generation DVD technology to embrace.
Instead, the people victorious march on their own path with EVD (enhanced versatile disc), a made-in-Beijing format designed to relieve manufacturers of players and discs from the burden of paying royalties on the DVD format.
More than 20 electronics manufacturers have pledged support for the format starting in 2008. But disc manufacturers aren't too hot on the idea of pressing two versions of every movie, and support outside China is practically nil.
Previous Chinese attempts at establishing new standards, including S-VCD (Super Video Compact Disc) format introduced in the mid-1990s, failed to gain widespread support even within China.
